Concrete Work FAQS

Concrete works well in larger projects, while cement is more often used in smaller jobs. One of the strongest and longest-lasting materials known to man, concrete is used to build schools, bridges, sidewalks, and countless other structures. But you don't need a hard hat to have success with concrete.

In standard industrial cases, full strength concrete is recognized at 28 days. At seven days, you should have concrete that is cured to 70% full strength or greater.

Cement is a fine-grained compound that turns into a solid when mixed with water. ... Concrete is a mixture of cement, sand, and gravel. That is, cement is the glue of concrete.

Concrete is a pretty remarkable manmade material that's extremely durable over time. ... That means concrete is not waterproof. Brand new cured concrete might be relatively waterproof for a little while, but it doesn't take long at all for water to penetrate the surface and begin to cause deterioration

Concrete is basically a mixture of aggregates and paste. The aggregates are sand and gravel or crushed stone; the paste is water and portland cement. Concrete gets stronger as it gets older.

When there is too much water in the concrete, there is greater shrinkage with the possibility for more cracks and reduced compressive strength.

A fun fact about concrete before we begin. In Palm Beach County, the department of transportation has around 1,645 different concrete mixes that they make a road, sidewalk, or bridge with. Concrete work has become a fine science of different mixtures like baking a cake. Almost 1/2 of the high-quality limestone that is used in concrete work comes right here from pits in Miami-Dade County.

Concrete is made of 4 main ingredients. cement, coarse aggregate ( gravel ), fine aggregate (sand), and water. The aggregates ( sand and gravel ) are mixed and make up to 60% – 75% of the overall mixture.  The rest of the mixture is cement and water. Sometimes, fly ash or chemicals are added to the mixture as well. By adding these extra ingredients to the concrete it not only strengthens and adds durability but also hardens and controls the setting of the concrete. When water is added to the mixture the cement starts what is called the hydration process. This process is the hardening of the concrete and also binds gravel and sand together.  Water is one of the most important processes and this is where concrete work can become difficult. Too much water will reduce the durability and strength of the concrete. Not enough water will make the concrete unworkable and destroying the mixture.  When doing any type of concrete work you need to know the right ratio to make the perfect concrete. Curing Concrete

Next comes the curing process. After the concrete has been poured and finished, the curing process begins. One thing you do not want happen is to have the concrete dry too quickly. Curing times on average between 2-14 days depending on the application used. At K-Boys Construction we know the proper curing techniques of concrete work so that the finished result is a strong durable concrete that will last for years to come.

Working with Reinforced Concrete

Reinforced concrete is concrete that has been reinforced with wire mesh or steel bars. This is placed into the concrete and helps spread the load's tension. For example, if a concrete beam is created and rebar is not placed within the concrete, the beam would carry all the stress in the middle. When adding the rebar, the stress load in then spread out making the beam much stronger for load-bearing.
