There are a few types of In-law suites renovations that people hire contractors to do below we will discuss the different types of in-law suites.

Basement Renovation In - law Suit

A basement renovation is a perfect spot for an inlaw - suite.  The benefits to a basement renovation into an in-law suite is that you always have a huge unused space, so it is less costly than say addition to the home. The downside is most in-law suites are geared to the elderly and the stairs might be an issue. Safety for your elderly loved one and the ability to walk up and down the stairs should be a number one concern. Luckily, we have stair lifts that will comfortable and safely allow your elderly parent to be lifted up the stair with ease. The average stair lift with 12 -14 stairs will cost between $2,000 - $5,000  depending on the type and model of the stair lift.
The other perk to renovation the basement into an in-law suite is that you already have most of the plumbing and electrical completed. You might have to make subtle changes but this can be a huge saving in the overall renovation.
Other thing to consider is access to the outside. You want to have at least one access point so that if ever there is an emergency such as fire your loved one will have an escape route without having to go up the stairs or use a stair lift that might not be functional in an emergency situation.

Bump Out

Another idea for an In-law suite is a bump out or addition to the home. The benefits of a bump out are that you are working with a whole new construction project so the sky is the limit on size and design. These, however, are more pricey simply because the cost of all the materials and you will need a building permit as well.
You will then need to factor in electrical and plumping. These types of in-law suits bring the most value to your home. Not only is a bump out in-law suites attractive to buyers, but it can also become an added source of income to rent out. An average bump out in-law suite will add $10,000 to your properties value as long as the in-law suite is property constructed and matches the exterior design of the home.

Attic In-Law Suits

Converting your attic into an in-law suite is also an option. Again stairs can play a major role if you are considering an in-law suite for an elderly loved one. Ventilation is something you also need to consider. Making sure the attic in-law suite is well ventilated is a must.
You also want to consider that during an emergency such as fire the access point would not be a good as a basement or bump - out in-law suit. Another factor would be the attic space itself. Does it have high enough headroom? You would need at least 6'7 feet. Will it support a full-scare in-law suite? Correcting any of these conditions would require the services of an architect.
